[Above] Recommended day-trip: Mare Island in Vallejo. Stroll through the SF Ferry Building, catch the ferry for a scenic cruise, explore an industrial landscape, visit a remarkable museum, go for a lovely hike, picnic beneath missiles, and visit an old naval cemetery where legend says a bear is interred, for some reason.
Your humble Curator: Bart Bernhardt, co-boss of Nerd Nite SF, a monthly lecture-in-a-bar series where scientists, historians, lawyers, and other experts drink beer and then give talks.
This week: We raise a toast to making stuff, pour some out for lost friends, take a swig to steady our nerves after macabre puppetry, and learn the history of SF’s favorite daydrinking park.
COMING UP THIS WEEK:
Drinkering and Tinkering
Make stuff in a bar. What’s not to love? Chabot Space and Science Center brings the tools and materials, you just get to show up and build stuff!
MAY 23 – WEDS. 6 – 9 pm at Drake’s Dealership in Oakland. Free.
Lone Mountain Cemeteries and Discovering Edith Cook
San Francisco was once dotted with cemeteries. When they were relocated, in classic Poltergeist-fashion, not all the bodies were moved. Hear the tale of a 140-year old little girl’s casket found during a home remodel and what it says about SF’s lost cemeteries.
MAY 24 – THURS. 7 – 8:30pm at Westen Neighborhoods Project HQ in SF. $10. ALMOST SOLD OUT!
California Academy of Sciences Nightlife: Tribute to Ray “Bones” Bandar
I grew up working at the Cal Academy, and it’s filled with extraordinary people. One such person was the legendary and beloved Ray “Bones” Bandar, whose personal collection of skulls became known as “The Bone Palace”. The Academy pays tribute to Bones with a night of bones, archaeology, and cocktails.
MAY 24 – THURS. 6 – 10pm at California Academy of Sciences in SF. $15.
Awesöme Orchestra
What happens when an orchestra is open to everyone and plays everywhere (but music halls)? It sounds like a borderline anarchestra, and wonderful. Enjoy this pop-up curbside orchestral adventure. (If you’re a musician – of any skill level – you can sign up for future adventures. You get beer, too!)
MAY 26. 2 – 5pm outside of the SFPL. Free!
Handsome Devil Puppets
“Folktales, murder ballads, and original songs” with puppets that are both beautiful and goddamn nightmare fuel. Malkovich? Malkovich.
MAY 26 – SAT. 8pm – ? at Scout’s Artillery in SF. $10-15 suggested.
Dolores Park History Day
There’s more than robot dance parties and questionably-sourced edibles at Dolores Park. From the Ohlone Indians to the Spanish Mission, as a Jewish cemetery, and as a 1906 earthquake refugee camp, Dolores Park has lived several very different lives. Several pop-up stations will tell those stories.
MAY 26 – SAT. 2 – 6pm at you-know-where. Free!
CODAME Art+Tech Festival 2018 #ARTOBOTS
A bit further out than a week, so mark your calendars: Four days of performances, workshops, talks installations, and other programs at the intersection of art, technology, play, and performance. Way too much awesome here to list.
JUNE 4 – 7. At the Midway in SF. Various prices.
