This week’s Curator: Bart Bernhardt of Nerd Nite SF.

Howdy! There are plenty of happenings in the next week involving county fairs and fireworks and copious quantities of grilled food, which I’m all in favor of.

But beyond all the flags and fanfare, there are people doing strange things with electricity, intriguing conversations at the de Young, botanical murder mysteries, Saturday morning cartoons, and so much more. Here are a few events on my radar for the next week:

COMING UP THIS WEEK:

dorkbotSF #100
For 16 years, dorkbotSF has been showcasing people doing strange things with electricity. This week marks the one hundredth gathering for showing and talking about the wonderful things they’ve built/smashed/thought about.
JUNE 27, WEDS. 7PM, DNA LOUNGE, SAN FRANCISCO, DONATIONS HIGHLY ENCOURAGED

Thinking Machines: Synthetic Biology
The Thinking Machines exhibit at the de Young is great. You’ll want more than the one hour that this program allots to experience it, but on the other hand you’ll enjoy the contrast of the exhibit with a conversation on synthetic biology with three delightfully smart people, including The Anglerfish’s own Annalee Newitz.
JUNE 28, THURS. 6PM, DE YOUNG MUSEUM, SAN FRANCISCO, $25

Murder at the Conservatory
Death lurks within the foliage of the Conservatory of Flowers and a cryptic tome of botanical wonders, perhaps holding the secret to immortality, lies at the heart of the mystery. Enjoy the sleuthing, theater, and adult beverages in SF’s beloved Victorian greenhouse.
JUNE 29, FRI. 7PM, CONSERVATORY OF FLOWERS, SAN FRANCISCO, $105

The Most Unknown
A neuroscientist grapples with dark matter, a primatologist searches a cave for extremophiles. By taking leading scientists and dropping them into different fields, director Ian Cheney (advised by Werner Herzog) teases out profound vignettes about our drive for discovery at the frontiers of understanding. These two screenings feature a Q&A with the lead producer, Elliot Kirschner.
JUNE 29, FRI. 7:00PM, BIG ROXIE, SAN FRANCISCO, $8-12
JUNE 30, SAT. 8:15PM, RIALTO CINEMAS, BERKELEY, $11-13

See You at the 7
Back when riders and horses needed regular breaks on long journeys, “mile houses” dotted the roads. The last of these in the Bay Area still standing in its original location is the 7 Mile House in Brisbane built around 1858. Since the stagecoach days, the 7 Mile House has seen gambling, prostitution, moonshining, and more – all lovingly documented by the owner, Vanessa Garcia, who has overseen its revitalization. If you don’t feel like schlepping to Brisbane, you can hear from Vanessa at this SFPL event.
JUNE 30, SAT. 11AM, SFPL MAIN, SAN FRANCISCO, FREE

Popcorn for Breakfast
Saturday morning cartoons in the theater! PJs and kids of all ages welcome.
JUNE 30, SAT 11:30AM, LITTLE ROXIE, SAN FRANCISCO, $9 (KIDS UNDER 12 FREE)

USS Hornet’s 4th of July Celebration
There are many places to celebrate the 4th of July in the Bay Area, but few are as ‘murican as giant aircraft carrier. Brass bands, sea shanties, tours, flight simulators, drinks, and a unique view of the fireworks.
JULY 4, 2-10PM, USS HORNET, ALAMEDA, $25/$15/FREE

The Elsewhere Philatelic Society Self-Guided Membership Adventure
Audio guides for historical tours of San Francisco are plentiful. But only one reveals the great rivalry between the secret societies of philatelicists and numatismicists that shaped our fair City. Download the “audio stamps” and the application form, put on your headphones and walking shoes, and embark on your journey to become a fully prepared mail carrier.

Caveat Eventor: just because we mention an event here, does not mean it won’t be terrible. Anglerfish curators are looking for events that sound like fun to them – your mileage may vary.
