Rick Prelinger’s Lost Landscapes 13
As mentioned in last week’s edition of The Anglerfish, Lost Landscapes is a can’t-miss screening of historical found footage, and a way to see SF’s past like nothing else. If you can’t make it to the Castro Theatre tonight, look to the top of Salesforce Tower – the newly restored 1906 film, “A trip down Market Street before the fire”, will be playing on the top of the skyscraper between 6-7 and 9-10 PM tonight.

Wonder Women: Golden Gate Park Walking Tour
There’s a new local history oriented tour outfit in town: We are excited about I Spy Tours, exploring untold stories from San Francisco history. This tour of Golden Gate Park is part of the “Wonder Women” series, looking at the lives of the Bay Area’s “Lady artists, pioneers, revolutionaries, politicians, entertainers, and generally impressive dames”.

Books and Public Discourse: Rebecca Solnit and Paul Yamazaki
As we increasingly move into a digital-everything age, what is the role of the book? Author Rebecca Solnit and City Lights book buyer Paul Yamazaki discuss the future of the printed word as part of SFMOMA’s Public Knowledge series.

The Demo @ 50: The Engelbart Symposium
50 years ago, Douglas Englebart gave a computer demonstration at a conference in SF. That demo would later be dubbed “The Mother of All Demos” – the first unified vision of all the fundamental components of a modern PC in a single system: The mouse, hypertext, windows, word processing, video conferencing, and much more. The landmark presentation shaped the development of the PC. To mark the occasion, numerous computing luminaries are gathering

We’re celebrating the close of our fifth year with our annual tribute to the strangest and most wonderful stories that did not find a home in this year’s themed line ups. Anglerfish-er Annetta Black is curating the eveving’s tales of eccentric builders and crackpot science, Vernian adventures and musical duels, railway schemes and military goats – plus a pre-salon art gallery and cocktail hour, our special holiday shop, and the official welcoming of our 2018 Fellows.

The End of Trust: McSweeney’s 54 Release Party with EFF
The latest issue of McSweeney’s is a collaboration with Electronic Frontier Foundation, San Francisco’s longtime digital liberties organization, defending your rights through legal action and activism around cutting-edge tech issues. Come celebrate its release, and immerse yourself in this gorgeous book full of essays about freedom and security in the information age. Anglerfish’s own Annalee Newitz will be moderating a panel discussion with author Cory Doctorow and EFF director Cindy Cohn; there will be readings from Jenny Odell and Elizabeth Stix; plus general mingling with tech law geeks, privacy wonks, and people who love to read the publications of regulatory agencies. SciComm Studio 015: The Cannabis Conversation
There’s a whole lot of smoke being blown when it comes to marijuana policy. Three experts will help clear the air with a discussion on how researchers and practitioners can best communicate with the public.

Boots Riley X-mas Show
This month is packed with great shows at City Lights Bookstore, but we’re especially excited about this one. The evening features Oakland hip hop artist (The Coup) and filmmaker Boots Riley, whose movie Sorry to Bother You is a masterpiece of mindblowing, locally-made science fiction. Riley is celebrating the release of his screenplay in book form, and is joined by electrifying poet Tongo Eisen-Martin, whose recent, award-winning collection Heaven Is All Goodbyes will rip out your heart and make you laugh bitterly about it. Plus, mixologist DJ CAIROCITOS will be there too! Strap yourself in for an amazing evening of political art, surrealism, and sound.
