This week’s Curator: Bart Bernhardt of Nerd Nite SF
Greetings, fellow humans. I, too, enjoy the consumption of ethanol and the assimilation of new information. Would you like to go to SELECT * FROM Upcoming_Nerdery WHERE Event_Date < ‘2019-07-25’ ?
Robot bartenders, beer gardens and history, kawaii gone awry, the science of Vin Diesel, and easel combat – I hope there is something weird and wonderful for you to do this week.
Thanks for reading The Anglerfish! Follow us on @ & FB and tell your curious-er friends to subscribe to The Anglerfish, too.
COMING UP THIS WEEK:
Nerd Nite SF
Hey, I organize a thing: This month, a couple hundred people cram into a bar to drink and cheer on a scientist, a brewer, and a filmmaker talking about radioactive elements, beer revolutions, and cable cars.
WED JUL 17, 7pm; Rickshaw Stop, SF; $10
Big Screen Science: Fast Five
Fellow Anglerfishian Kishore Hari cohosts a night of the FAST & FURIOUS & SCIENCE! Order drinks, watch a movie, and then take physics way too seriously. Fun for both the Fast fans, or the Furious-curious.
WED JUL 17, 6:30pm; Alamo Drafthouse, SF; $14.34
Super Speechless
HULK ADVANCE NEXT SLIDE! Speechless Live, the improv comedy slideshow talk series, takes a page from the comic book at their secret volcano lair of doom (OK, it’s at Public Works SF). Organized by also-Anglerfishian Mikl Em, who is most definitely not approved by the Comics Code Authority.
THU JUL 18, 6:30pm; Public Works SF, SF; $17
Designers + Geeks: The Subversion of Cute and Designing Responsible Tech
The Creative Director of Google Emoji talks about the power dynamics of cute design, and Kevin Web Page talks responsibilities. Although I have reservations about the judgement of someone who calls himself “Kevin Web Page” but what do I know.
THU JUL 18, 7pm; 140 New Montgomery, SF; $20
Splashdown 50 Stargazing Overnight
The USS Hornet Sea, Air & Space Museum played a crucial role in the Apollo 11 mission. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of that mission, come aboard the aircraft carrier for an overnight sleepover.
FRI JUL 19, 6pm; USS Hornet, Alameda; $?
EDIT: Sold out! But leaving it up here so you know to look for future naval/science pillow talk opportunities. Be sure to check out the other Splashdown 50th Anniversary events at the USS Hornet, too.
Botanicals and Brews
Throughout the summer, the Conservatory of Flowers hosts a monthly beer garden program with special guests, food trucks, and breweries. This month features some of my favorite people at the Western Neighborhoods Project revealing the history of the Conservatory.
FRI JUL 19, 6:30pm; Conservatory of Flowers, SF; $29-$49
Far Out: Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Moon Landing
Today, “moonshot” is becoming just another throwaway buzzword. But when I talked with my dad or grandparents about the moon landing it had another level of resonance. It was science fiction made reality. It was staggering visionaries and innovators, tragedies and heroics, fear and power and wonder. The SFMOMA captures some of that imagination and challenge in a new exhibition.
SAT JUL 20, 1pm; SFMOMA, SF; $25
Cocktail Robotics Grand Challenge
The cutting edge in bartending technology, these machines dispense beverages with style, grace, and efficiency. Or sometimes not. Advanced cocktail robotics is hard. Come for the spectacular engineering and mad science, stay for the algorithmic beverage service.
SUN JUL 21, 5pm; DNA Lounge, SF; $20
Marcia Bjornerud: Timefulness
The Long Now Foundation’s “Seminars About Long-term Thinking” are utterly fascinating provocations. In this program, a geologist weaves a picture of our unstoppably changing world, despite our best efforts.
MON JUL 22, 7:30pm; SFJAZZ Center, SF; $25
Katherina Audley, “When Whales Win, Everyone Wins”
Join the American Cetacean Society at one of my favorite engineering landmarks in SF, to learn about a community in Mexico that has embraced whale conservation and in the process transformed their community.
TUE JUL 23, 7pm; The Bay Model Visitor Center, Sausalito; Donations encouraged
Art Battle
Haven’t been to one of these but it looks promising: Dueling brushes take the stage as artists furiously speed-create in gladiartorial combat. ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED? (Seriously. If you go, let us know if you were entertained.)
WED JUL 24, 6:30pm; Colorbloq, SF; $20
Laborfest
Talks, walks, screenings, art, and more; the 26th annual Laborfest continues through July with dozens of programs, more than I can enumerate here.
ONGOING; various
