The Garden of Memory
From bells to electric guitars, choral groups to acapella performances – Oakland’s architectural masterpiece of a columbarium is filled with music and life every solstice for the Garden of Memory celebration. Note: advance ticket sales end on June 20, but there are tickets available at the door.

500 Queer Scientists Panel at Pride Nightlife
Cal Academy is kicking off Pride weekend with a drag show, dance party and a launch discussion of the new 500 Queer Scientists project, started by Academy scientists Dr. Lauren Esposito and Sean Edgerton. The project aims to raise the visibility of LGBTQ+ people working in the sciences, to provide role models, and new community connections in STEM fields.

“A Guided Tour of Hell” (Artist talk)
Artist Pema Namdol Thaye discusses his creative process and the inspiration behind the Asian Art Museum’s exhibit exploring the Tibetan Buddhist realms of hell.

“Women who Work Together” Closing Art Reception
The last chance to admire the artworks created by the women of the local Five Ton Crane arts collective, responsible for several large-scale art installations at Burning Man and beyond. This show highlights the works of fourteen of the women members of the group.

Grand Hotel (Film screening)
BAMFA is pulling out the classic golden age film “Grand Hotel” for a Sunday evening viewing. Featuring MGM’s biggest stars of their day: Greta Garbo, Joan Crawford, Lionel Barrymore, John Barrymore, and Wallace Beery, the screening is part of the series “The Luminous Legacy of Greta Garbo“, continuing into July.

Night Tour of the Mechanics’ Institute
Take a peek inside one of San Francisco’s historic buildings and one of my favorite overlooked treasures: the Mechanics’ Institute Library and Chess Rooms. Dating back to the bad old days of the city’s wild west era, the library is now the oldest on the West Coast, housed inside their purpose built post-1906 building on Post St. Worth it for the spiral staircase alone.

The Art of Rube Goldberg
There’s just a little more time to catch this exhibit at the ContempOrary Jewish Museum, showcasing the career and artwork of Rube Goldberg, including rare never-before exhibited items from original drawings and sketches to photographs, films, letters, and memorabilia from the Goldberg family archives.
