Climate is a bear. Photo credit: Don’s Big Art

This week’s Curator: Mikl Em of The Interval and Long Now

Got climate? This week in San Francisco climate is everywhere. It kinda always is, but the Global Climate Action Summit has brought the world to town to work on the problem. So if you spot Mike Bloomberg, Jane Goodall, or Dave Matthews around town, that’s why. Actual Summit events are invite-only (there is a livestream), but for 99%-ers like us there are LOTS of related events ranging from panel discussions to dance performances (I pick a few below). You may have already seen the 36′-tall polar bear which survived Burning Man to hang out at the Ferry Building. Don’t miss The Standing March which is (literally) on City Hall through Thursday.

We can’t live by Climate concern alone, so there’s absurdity, cat videos, books, chocolate, and Fringe theater. Also, anarchy. Just another week in SF, really.

COMING UP THIS WEEK:

Global Climate Action Summit related events
There are dozens of climate events this week on a vast range of topics: AI, VR, art, religion, science, activism; an inspiring, mind-boggling assortment. Mostly in San Francisco with many free daytime events if you have time. Reviewing the full event list is difficult due to poor website design. I picked a few below which look promising:

SEPT 12-15 – WED-SAT: various places, various prices, various times

The San Francisco Fringe Festival
Runs through Saturday. Mentioned last week, but I wanted to share a few tips. There are 3 theaters under one roof at The EXIT and shows start at the same time w/ tickets available at the door. So you can zigzag between shows with a mix of planning and impulse. Use audience reviews to find out what’s good. Performers often hand out flyers in the hallway to promote their show, like a theatrical bazaar. Get a bit of the odd for the full Fringe experience.
SEPT 12-15: starts at 7 PM on WED-FRI PM; SAT shows 2 to 9 PM at 156 Eddy Street, SF; less than $15 (all $$ goes to the artists)

2018 Bay Area Anarchist Book Fair
For people interested and engaged in radical work to connect and learn through book and information tables, workshops, panel discussions, skillshares, films and more. For 20 years this was run by Bound Together, the venerable anarchist book store on Haight. Not clear they are still involved (hey, it’s anarchy!), but this is always a vector for current and vintage Bay Area counter culture. It’s a good year to get in touch with that. In glorious irony they’d like you to RSVP on Facebook.
SEPT 15 – SAT: 10 AM to 6:30 PM at Omni Commons (4799 Shattuck Ave, Oakland); Free (donation encouraged)

Other Cinema 2018 season: Damon Packard’s “Fatal Pulse” premier
Craig Baldwin’s Other Cinema has been a fixture at Artists’ Television Access since roughly the Pleistocene epoch. Films and videos that are weird, wonderful, resistant, deviant, progressive, artistic, disgusting, innovative, historic, hilarious and basically impossible to find anywhere else appear here each week. Curated by Baldwin who is a celebrated independent filmmaker and all the above stuff. This week he has a premier from another veteran indie director Damon Packard. Upcoming OC nights I hope to catch: 9/29 benefit for artist Kal Spelletich will be full of garage robot surprises; 10/6 films related to Jack Parsons, occultist co-founder of Jet Propulsion Lab, with a talk by Erik Davis; 10/20 watching the 90’s films of local Greta Snider are my favorite Mission flashbacks.
SEPT 15 – SAT: 8:30 PM ATA Gallery, 992 Valencia in the Mission, SF; $9

CatVideoFest at the Roxie
Where else can you watch cat videos? Okay, anywhere. But this is a list about doing things, so we implore you to be real-world-social about your feline voyeurism. Tickets benefit Fix Our Ferals, so it makes even more sense.
SEPT 16-17: 1PM Sunday / 7pm Monday; 3117 16th St in the Mission SF; $12

Terminator 2: Judgement Day at Big Screen Science
“Big Screen Science” is hosted by science communicator (and co-Anglerfisher-er) Kishore Hari and astrophysicist Jeff Silverman at San Francisco’s Alamo Drafthouse. Each month they explore the science of a favorite movies. Time travel and liquid metal robots discussed so seriously it’s hilarious.
SEPT 17 – MON: 7 PM at Alamo Drafthouse in the Mission, SF; $15.50

Odd Salon: ABSURD at Public Works SF
From Camus to college football, odd sharks and an Italian stallion truly this is the Absurd edition of Odd Salon. My fellow Anglerfish editor Annetta Black and team always have an amazing selection of inspired speakers, bringing history to life with the help of SCIENCE! and the warm embrace of the usual, irregular crowd. Always recommended.
SEPT 18 – TUE: 6:30-10 PM at Public Works, SF; $15

Nicola Twilley at The Interval: The Artificial Cryosphere
The invisible backbone of our food system is a man-made, distributed, and perpetual winter of refrigeration we’ve built for our food to live in. Nicola Twilley (who writes for The New Yorker and co-hosts Gastropod) has researched this system in depth. She will explain the past, present, and future of refrigeration: how it has changed us and the world. I am hosting this event and can promise it will be cool.
SEPT 18 – TUE: 6:30pm doors talk at 7:30pm at The Interval, Fort Mason, San Francisco; $25 (only a few tickets left)

Caveat Eventor: just because we mention an event here, does not mean it won’t be terrible. Anglerfish curators are looking for events that sound like fun to them – your mileage may vary.
