Nerd Nite SF hits 100 this week – a sampling of the posters over the years. Photo credit: DJ Alpha Bravo

Friend and fellow Anglerfishian, Bart Bernhardt, has his long running series Nerd Nite San Francisco hit edition 100 this Wednesday. Along fellow organizer Lucy Laird, DJ Alpha Bravo, and countless volunteers, they’ve put together one of the most quirky, smart, and downright enjoyable events in SF. From the time they took over an aircraft carrier to learning about assholes in science history to tales of Monarch the bear – it’s been an amazing ride that all started at at renovated car shop/co-op back in 2009. But what I love about Nerd Nite is how it feels like home to me – a bunch of nerds from all over the map, come together to learn, drink, and socialize (with a few weddings as a result).
Bart isn’t one for nostalgia, so I’m sure he’ll hate this intro. But here’s a virtual toast to one of those things that makes San Francisco, so San Francisco. Here’s hoping for another 100!

COMING UP THIS WEEK:
Nerd Nite SF: 100
Sword canes. Yep – that’s a thing. With a weird history to boot. Plus our bias and its impact on AI and the history of one of the greatest and most accurately and poorly named physics experiment – the double slit.
SEPT 19 – WED: 7 PM Rickshaw Stop, SF; $8.
San Francisco Map Fair
20 antique map, print, and book dealers from all across the world will have amazing maps, prints, and books from the past 500 years for sale. Plus a lecture series all weekend long curated by the California Map Society. All net proceeds from the S.F. Map Fair will benefit the History in Your Hands Foundation, a non-profit organization the seeks to provide classrooms with authentic, historical objects in an effort to help foster a more enriched learning experience.
SEPT 21- SEPT 23 – FRI-SUN: Various times, Regency Center, SF; $5-50.
Ocean Research Ship Tour
Take a free tour of one of the most advanced research vessels in the world: the R/V Falkor. Owned and operated by the Schmidt Ocean Institute, Falkor is returning to San Francisco to prepare for an expedition to explore hydrothermal vents off the coast of California.
SEPT 23 – SUN: 10AM-4 PM. Tours every 15 minutes at Exploratorium, SF; Free – RSVP required.
Nerd Nite East Bay
Termites and Banjos go together right? Start the evening off with a lesson from Hot Buttered Rum followed by a deep dive into the world of termites. Plus, machine learning for less air turbulence. Even that one I don’t quite get.
SEPT 24 – MON: 7 PM: Club 21, Oakland; $8.
Road Map for Revolutionaries: Tools for Everyday Activists
Do you even protest bro? Peer into the toolbook of experienced activists as they discuss how everyone can have their voice heard. And it’s not always about shouting louder or working harder. Sometimes its just what you do at the dinner table.
SEPT 24 – MON: 630 PM: Commonwealth Club, SF; $15-25.
Sketchy Tuesday
Put down the mouse – grab your pencil and notebook and head out on an urban sketch adventure. Sketchy Tuesday was created by landscape designer Alyssa Erickson, who invited the team at Arterra Landscape Architects to go outside, get “lunch together and sketch our surroundings in sketch books.” Sounds magical – and this years edition is held in conjunction with 15 month-long Architecture and the City festival.
SEPT 24 – TUE: 12-1 PM: Sydney Walton Park, SF; Free.
SF Transit Week
It’s time to get transit positive at this week long celebration (and critique) of SF transit. Panels on the history and future of local transit, some trivia, and even a ferry ride-along. Plus an award celebration for best system?
SEPT 24 – 28: Various locations across SF; most events free.
DorkBot 101
100 is so last month. Dorkbot enters its second century of events with talks/demos on human machine collaboration and synthesis synthesis for fun and profit. Actually, that last one kind of scares me. But that’s not a bad thing.
SEPT 26 – WED: 7-10 PM at DNA Lounge, SF; Free but $5-20 donations encouraged.

Caveat Eventor: just because we mention an event here, does not mean it won’t be terrible. Anglerfish curators are looking for events that sound like fun to them – your mileage may vary.
