This four-armed turntable isn’t for a strange new style of DJing, but for digitizing 78rpm records, which you can listen to here. Photo credit: Internet Archive

This week’s Curator: Bart Bernhardt, enthusiast of both drunken learning and learned drinking.

Douglas Adams once said “I love deadlines. I love the whooshing noise they make as they go by.” I am subbing in this week for our regularly scheduled curator, Annalee Newitz, who is experiencing much whooshing. Should you find yourself in similar circumstances, it’s important to take a moment for reflection or even distraction. Be it admiring a beautiful garden, praying for a soul lost at sea, or just blowing off steam with an old fashioned unicorn joust. All that and more this week.

Thank you for reading The Anglerfish! Please follow us on @ & FB and tell your curious-er friends to subscribe to The Anglerfish, too.

COMING UP THIS WEEK:

The Journey Talks: Jack Sim, Founder of the World Toilet Organization
Bathroom access is something that gets argued about a lot here in SF. 20 years ago, Jack Sim spearheaded a restroom renaissance in Singapore and has gone on to proselytize the public privvy around the world. In this fireside chat, Jack will talk about that journey.
SEPT 26, 6:30 – 8:30 PM. IndieBio, SF. FREE.

Portola Garden Tour
The Portola neighborhood is a bit unusual for SF in that it actually has yards! And sun! It’s a hotbed for gardening, amateur and award-winning alike. This annual tour takes you into the public and private gardens of the Portola neighborhood to admire the works of those with greener thumbs than I, followed by beers made with locally grown hops at FDR Brewery.
SEPT 29, 10 AM -3 PM. Portola neighborhood, SF. $20-$25.

Forbidden Island Parking Lot Sale
One of our favorite places to drink is hosting a two day sale of all things tiki, vintage, rockabilly, etc. Personally, I’m smitten with Chris Shima’s Cthulhu tiki mugs, but Stranger Things fans might prefer the Demogorgon tiki mug. Saturday and Sunday will host different vendors.
SEPT 29 – 30, 2 – 7 PM. Forbidden Island, Alameda. $5-$10.

83rd Annual Festa della Madonna del Lume
Beyond the flashing lights and gawking tourists, past the Segway tours and t-shirt hawkers, there is a real fisherman’s wharf. Over the years, some have set sail from this wharf and not returned. On Saturday, a memorial Mass, followed by a procession of fishing boats that will sail beyond the Golden Gate, will honor those lost at sea. On Sunday, there will be high Mass followed by a procession on foot, and then a blessing of the fleet.
SEPT 29 – 30. Fishermen’s and Seamen’s Memorial Chapel in Fisherman’s Wharf, SF. FREE.

Princess Picnic
Hear ye! Hear ye! Her Royal Highness, the aptly dubbed Grumpy Princess, has declared a celebration for her subjects. There shall be daydrinking, a puppet kissing booth, and a bouncy castle. Brave knights may joust upon unicorns for the hand of Her Royal Grumpiness. Princess, faerie, ogre, and similar attire required.
SEPT 30. 12 – 5 PM. The Royal Gardens AKA Lindley Meadow in Golden Gate Park, SF. FREE.

Building A Better Web: Internet Archive’s Annual Bash
The Internet Archive is one of the great treasures of SF. From the Wayback Machine which stores copies of websites over time, digitized books (including the book from whence came our adorable mascot), videos from the Prelinger Archives, classic video games emulated in your browser, and more. The Internet Archive strives to be the digital Library of Alexandria for the modern age. Come celebrate and support their latest successes with drinks, demos, ice cream, dancing, and a lot of cool stuff.
OCT 3, 5-10PM. Internet Archive, SF. $15-$100.

SF Olympians 9: Roman Holiday
Salve, citizen! For their wondrous performances, throw no roses at these plays, but seat instead gilded laurel upon the actors’ brows. The San Francisco Olympians Festival presents 27 new plays, each exploring a different legend or god from ancient Rome. (Look for The Anglerfish’s own Mikl Em at The Night of the Triple Goddess on October 20!)
OCT 3 – 20. The EXIT Theatre, SF. $10-$12.

Caveat Eventor: just because we mention an event here, does not mean it won’t be terrible. Anglerfish curators are looking for events that sound like fun to them – your mileage may vary.
