This week’s Curator: Mikl Em of The Interval and Speechless Live
I’ve got two tips for tonight, just in time to turn your hump day upside down. Over the weekend there are hack days, walking tours, and a most unusual yard sale. And don’t miss the chance to get Armenian by the Bay. Now get out there and have some fun!
Thanks for reading The Anglerfish! Follow us on @ & FB and tell your curious-er friends to subscribe to The Anglerfish, too.
COMING UP THIS WEEK:
Nerd Nite SF: Lyme, Mimes, & Peopling of the New World!
Nerds are all rite, every 3rd Wednesday night! My fellow Anglerfisher, Bart continues his ever-reliable drinkz n’ facts combo at the Rickshaw Stop. This month he and the team have an anthropological archaeologist, a disease ecologist, and a mime who is ready to talk. It’s in a bar, but all ages are welcome. And there are thematic tunes and tasty foodz on offer, too.
WED MAY 15: 7pm at Rickshaw Stop, Hayes Valley SF; $10
Bad Black at Alamo Drafthouse
If you like weird cinema or just want another way to bump into culture outside the every day, I recommend keeping an eye on Alamo Drafthouse’s Weird Wednesday lineup. This week we learn the word “Wakaliwood” which is a film-making scene of sub $200 budget action/martial arts flicks coming out of Uganda. Or did you already know about that? Sounds like a wild ride and tix are only $6. Tonight!
WED MAY 15: 9:30pm Mission, SF; $6
Podcast Theatre featuring San Francisco Chronicle Podcasters: #TotalSF
Chronicle writers Heather Knight and Peter Hartlaub took their local beats to the street last year with an epic MUNI marathon: they rode every route in a single day and documented it on social media. Knight covers City Hall and Hartlaub writes about pop culutre. They each have podcasts, too. That’s how they end up in Betabrand’s weekly show where different podcast popup and record live. Only a couple dozen tickets left and they are free.
THU MAY 16: 6:30pm at Betabrand, Mission SF; Free (limited RSVPs)
Speechless Live: School Daze
Once again I’m Anglerfishing on the week of my improv show Speechless Live; that’s where I’ll be Thursday. Please come say hi! A game show of funny people presenting slides they’ve never seen before is really as funny as it sounds. A couple pals from the old Dark Room Theater scene are on stage this time as part of a very funny lineup. 6:30pm is our Open Mic where you can play the game (or watch others try it for the first time), then the mainstage starts at 7:30. A night of unpredictable comedy. Use my code THXmikl to save a couple bucks.
THU MAY 16: 6:30pm at Public Works, Mission SF; $17 advance (discount code: THXmikl )
Armenian Food Festival in Oakland
Back to the idea of trying something new, maybe you’d like a tasty crash course in Armenian culture? It’s only the 66th annual. Don’t you think it’s time you dropped by? “We’ll have our delicious Armenian food, vegetarian fare and Hye Cafe, Armenian coffee and delicious desserts. Live music and dancing by Khatchig Jingirian Friday and Saturday nights starting at 9pm.”
FRI-SAT MAY 17-18: starts at 5:30pm on FRI / noon on SAT; St. Vartan Church, Oakland; $3
Hacking Food Justice
If you’re a designer or developer who’d like to spend Saturday hacking for a noble cause, apply here to take part in a day creating technology for local food-oriented non-profits like Food Shift and Berkeley Food Network. Hosted by General Assembly in partnership with Replate.
SAT MAY 18: 8:30am to 5pm at General Assembly, downtown SF; Free (must sign up ahead of time)
Yard Sale at The BARN
I don’t normally list yard sales (so don’t submit yours, please). But this is different. The BARN is also a venue that has hosted Haunted Barn events on Halloween, and all sorts of strange goings on. It’s the home and studio of the Life-size Mousetrap creator, members of the Cyclecide bike posse, and other early Burning Man type folks. There was even a freak show there once upon a time. So when they’re clearing out projects, costumes, and whatnot, I had to share. Especially because it’s priced to move: “Vintage Clothing, Art supplies, Tools, Furniture, Plants, Housewares Jewelry-Making supplies, Oddities and more!” Oddities, my friends. Oddities indeed.
SAT-SUN MAY 18 and 19: 9am to 6pm both days; Bayview, SF; Free (bring cash to buy stuff)
Alameda Neon Walking Tour
Tour the lights of the past today! “Take a twilight walking tour of the beautiful neon signs in the historic city of Alameda… From the grandeur of the Alameda Theater neon blade sign to the nearly invisible Pop Inn, downtown Alameda boasts a fine collection of vintage neon.”
SUN MAY 19: 9am to 6pm both days; Alameda; $25
